A man from Arizona buys a piece of land in the middle of a lava field while vacationing in Hawaii and returns to the island in search of a deeper sense of home and to build his midlife crisis tropical dream house.
In this assemblage of journal entries during the trying year of construction, the author tells some of the secrets of rural Hawaii, revealing her dark underbelly. Meet the crazy neighbors in Puna’s “open air asylum,” get lost on a late night lava walk, join a lynch mob against the coqui frogs, and find the true meaning of ‘aloha’ in the jungle.
“What do you do when you’ve run away from home again and you still want to keep running? This is a story of a relationship, not with just a house, but with a vision of home. I could have read twice as long a book with as much excitement—it was heartbreaking and hilarious to watch Gilmore’s poignant love affair disintegrate. As a reader, I was rooting for the love affair to last and I was stubbornly optimistic when it didn’t...but finally, he realizes one night, while holding his dog and swinging in the hammock, that he has built a perfect home in paradise—for someone else.” —Gillian Kendall, author of Mr. Ding’s Chicken Feet.

HomoSteading at the 19th Parallel eBook David Gilmore, Gillian Kendall, Kimberly Dark Reviews
I don't know if I am a lazy reader or simply very picky about how I spend my time. I tend to be a slow reader, because I really enjoy how well-orchestrated words relate to and bounce off each other, either in the same sentence or, indeed, even echoing in subsequent paragraphs or chapters. I have to admit that I often give a book little time to engage my interest and it will end up in the "give away" box, barely ruffled from page-turning. "HOMOSTEADING AT THE 19th PARALLEL" captured my interest at the introduction and sustained my eager attention to the journey, right through to the last word. Of course, having had the mind-boggling experience of designing and building a house, myself, I could relate to all the angst, as well as the joy.
If you have ever been involved with the torturous process of designing and building a home, you will appreciate this saga. If you've ever moved to a new part of the world with positive intentions and naive anticipation of achieving Utopia, only to have your rugs of enthusiasm jerked out from under you, you will appreciate this story. If you have done all this as a gay man, struggling to balance your own sense of self, with all the attendant social hoop-jumping, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK.
Even with all the relativity to my own experiences, it was David Gilmore's clever and almost poetic writing style that really made for a most enjoyable read. In one chapter, he even includes some of the poetry he wrote while in the enormous stress of the home building project. Talk about "baring one's soul".
I think everyone will be glad to have read this book.

Highly recommend this book for an intellectual honest look at what most tourists will not experience. The author has a fast flowing style that kept me intrigued even on sleepy nights when other books would have been my sleep aide. The characters are all colorful, the story telling a brilliant web of humor and frustration. As well as experiencing construction and community in Puna, a homosexual experience will be revealed under the starry skies.
Looking forward to Mr. Gilmore's next work.
