A Little Love Song Michelle Magorian 9780749710613 Books Reviews

This is an all time romantic novel from start to finish. It is so entertaining that you have to turn the next page. Wondeful book which i would advise anyone to read on a lonely, rainy day, it really puts you back in a good fame of mind. Also shows the effects of love on a wonderful girl who sees herself as under-deserving and ugly. A thrilling book from page one.
Michelle Magorian bases her books on characters during the devasting wartime. Probably her most famous book was `Goodnight Mr Tom', which was made into a successful film as well, but my personal favourite was `A Little Love Song'. It's a story about a 17-year-old girl, who is a talented writer but believes that she is not doing enough for the war and felt in the shadow of her swan like sister Diane, that she is an ugly duckling. This book is a classic Romance but also has an air of mystery to it, as through out the journey of the book she comes across men who are not good for her, but finally finds her true love, who is introduced at the start of the book but you don't realise how perfect he is for her until the final stages. The girl is called Rose and it is a time when the war has started and her mother is away entertaining the troops. So Rose and Diane were to live in a small cottage in Salmouth, away from harms way. But there is a mysterious locked room, which Rose finds the key for. There are several Diary's inside, which tell the story of a girl, about the same age as Rose, about her tragic story and how it came to an upsetting end. This was the most interesting part of the book for me as I felt sympathy and love for the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as it is filled with twists and lovely storylines, which fit together perfectly. I recommend this to anyone who loves a good read and a powerful love story.
I first read this book as a teenager about the same age as Rose, and it really brought my hopes and dreams to the pages. Magorian's other books are all fabulous, and each one has something special about it. A Little Love Song is both a coming-of-age story and a story about learning to enjoy oneself. Rose learns to use her talents and gifts instead of focusing on her failure to have other talents. The old American version "Not A Swan" is basically the same book, and the title is appropriate because Rose begins to understand that she doesn't have to be a swan to fly. Although it is set in Britain during wartime, the issues are not the political issues of the day but the eternal problems of becoming an adult. The setting and time period provide an interesting lens to look at those problems through. This book isn't really for anyone under age 13, as it has some scenes which might be considered inappropriate; try any of her other books instead first, and then get this one later. That said, I wouldn't say that there's anything inappropriate in there for teenagers, and this is a book you definitely don't want to miss.
I *loved* this book when I first read it as a 14-year-old (or thereabouts). Especially because there's romance in it that took me quite by surprise!... well - there's one very toxic romance that was quite bold for the way Magorian brings her heroine to realise that's NOT what love should be about, and then there's another - quieter - romance that highlighted female pleasure brilliantly. And all wrapped up in this WWII backdrop that showed what life was like on the Homefront and for those left behind.

There's also a great sister relationship at its story heart. AND - for those who have just seen the film 'Dunkirk' - a young soldier features who is dealing with physical and mental scars of surviving that ordeal.

All in all, this is one of Michelle Magorian's best - even better than her brilliant 'Good Night, Mr. Tom' (and that's really saying something!)
Good Night, Mr. Tom is an amazing story and I hoped Michelle Magorian's other books would at least be a fraction as good. This book was so disappointing. I was disappointed in the characters, their bad choices, followed by more bad choices, to the point where I was cringing to the very end. Quite immoral in my opinion.
Love this story but there are typos in the book that bug me.
